CustomerCentric and the race for president

In Customer Centric Selling, we believe a seller does not have a real prospect until a "suspect" has shared a goal with the seller. this got me thinking about the 2008 presidential race and led me to the question, "why are we asking presidential candidates for their PLANS?" Their "plans" for healthcare, or mideast policy or education or whatever? When has a president's plan EVER been executed as written? The answer is never. It is Congress' job to legislate. To formulate and implement programs and plans.

It is the President's job to lead. To hold Congress accountable for developing programs that support the will and needs of the people.

I propose we have all of our presidential candidates run only on GOALS. Each candidate should put forth his or her finite list (5 to 10) of goals in priority order. When the media asks for a plan - for "how" the goal will be achieved, the answer from all candidates should be something like, "even if i had a detailed plan, it would not matter because it is Congress' job to formulate and legislate programs. If you elect me on a goal of affordable health care, I will hold congress accountable for coming up with plans and programs to support that goal." How simple and effective. Candidates would not need the $100M they now think they need to be elected. How much of that money is currently allocated to TV ads that rip and shred the "plans" of the other candidate? Let their platforms each be a finite list of goals in priority order. It will make it much easer for less wealthy candidates to compete, and when a president is eventually elected, it will be very clear to congress the mandate the people want legislated.

What a great approach for any level of politician - I think I'll use it the next time they call asking for donations.
